OHS Weekly Sports Recap

Monday night was a big night for HS boys soccer against Meridian winning its home opener. Evan Deterding, George Martin, Jace Whitted, and Elliott Hohulin all scored goals or made assists. On defense, Elijah Smith had 7 saves. Boys and girls golf had matches with Clayton Barnes finishing in 1st place. Volleyball had their first match on Thursday against the Eureka Hornets. Varsity came out strong defeating the Hornets in the first set, but then fell short at the end against the state-ranked team even with the help of the Blue Crew. Other events, including cross country, were canceled due to the extreme heat.

The highlight of the scorching first full week of school was the Friday night home football game. After a winning season last spring, the stands started to fill early with excited fans. As usual, they were greeted by the mouth-watering smell of the pork chops off the grill from FFA. Rantoul scored first to take a 6-0 lead, but Olympia took control in the second quarter gaining a 12-6 lead by halftime. Rantoul was able to take a 14-12 lead early in the fourth quarter, though. The Spartans couldn’t get going on the ensuing drive and fumbled the ball away at their own 12-yard line. The defense held strong and stopped the Eagles on downs at the 7-yard line. Stuck deep inside their own territory, Oly had another fumble to give the Eagles the ball back inside the Spartan 30 with only 1:39 left in the game. Rantoul quickly ran a few more plays to score another touchdown, holding a 20-12 lead. At the kickoff reception, Reygan Sitton gathered the ball and sprinted up the left sideline through a huge opening from a key block by Bryson Wilson to score a touchdown with less than one minute left. Evan Rademaker was then able to run in for the 2-point conversion to tie the game. Olympia had the first opportunity to score in overtime and Landon Horning connected with Reygan Sitton for a 15-yard touchdown. The Spartans then successfully converted the 2-point play. Rantoul was able to score a touchdown, but unable to complete their 2-point conversion pass due to Evan Rademaker’s diving deflection to win the game at 28-26! Coach Eric Lyons quoted, “Craziest win of my career. Spears up Spartan Nation.”
